This desk is our attempt to capture the Arts and Crafts movement of William Morris and Gustav Stickley. A reflection on the past in the light of the present.
It is 60″ long x 32″ wide x 28.5″ h
The wood was harvested along the Sacramento River levy north of the valley farm town of Grimes. The tree was a hybrid of the native California walnut, claro, with the English walnut. The hybrid is known as paradox in the walnut grower community and Bastogne in the gunstock/woodworking network.
We found the complexity of grain and color of some of the boards too mottled to integrate in the frame of the desk so Tor decided to re-saw one of the boards into thick veneer and laminate the pieces onto solid wood, making the wraparound apron more homogenous.
The thumbs of wood that protrude through the top are a motif repeated in the drawer handle.
It is our pleasure to make traditional furniture of original design that reflects upon older traditions like the Danish Modern work of the last century and the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th.
