We were asked to create a soft seat set of dining chairs for a client. The problem with many contemporary padded seats is the foam is wrapped atop a solid piece of plywood. This defeats the attempt to create a soft place for the ischia bones, the sitting bones.
Our solution is to remove the center section of the Baltic birch plywood and strap it with woven stretchable Italian webbing. Atop this we shape the foam rubber, glue it to the webbing and complete the seat with fabric or leather.
We retain our distinctive ergonomic back system and customize the seat height to work with the table height. In dining chairs we have found that the most important measurement is the height of the seat to the top of the table. This seems to be more important than the height from the floor. If we are making the table we usually put the table top at 28.5”. If the table already exists we make the seat height to match the table top.
No one can tell you what is comfortable but we believe from our 53 years of chair making that this design works for most people.
This South Yuba Arm Chair has a Spinneybeck leather seat and is made in California walnut. Other woods available. An excellent dining or occasional chair.
